The Director of Technology is a leadership and management position responsible for the overall health of Kalamuna’s development practices. You will express thought leadership for a cross-functional team of front and backend developers, and intersect with design and project management disciplines. As a member of Kalamuna’s Leadership Team, you will collaborate with other Directors and the CEO to improve processes and best practices, set company priorities, and engage lightly in sales activities.
You will also drive innovation to build a set of core technology assets as part of our R&D program, coach team members on technology adoption across the organization, and ensure Kalamuna is known as an innovation leader in the community and among its partners.
Most of our technology implementation is in Drupal, WordPress, or static/decoupled site architectures. Knowledge of these platforms is certainly valuable, but we’re more concerned with strong, collaborative team management skills that support team growth.

Responsibilities
- Represent and advance the interests of development practices in company leadership spaces
- Participate in the running of the company with visibility into financials, HR and operations
- Determine the adoption of new technologies, abandonment of others, and maintenance of our selected toolchains
- Develop and communicate a long-term technical strategy for systems architecture, code quality, and technical innovation
- Hiring and onboarding developers, including leading recruitment efforts, engaging in the community to cultivate relationships, and maintaining a healthy hiring pipeline
- Steward efforts for professional development of dev team members
- Promote developer attendance at conferences and training events
- Organize (monthly) workshops to introduce new technologies and practices to the team, reinforce best practices, and build meaningful relationships with our partners
- Mentor staff through 1:1s and annual reviews
- Lead Kalamuna’s Research & Development initiatives
- Act as Kalamuna’s primary point of contact with US and Canadian R&D consultants to validate our programs, generate our reports, and respond to government requests
- Describe client-facing programs, processes, and outcomes
- Work with Sales to scope and estimate technical needs on projects
- Steward Kalamuna’s presence in code communities
- Ensure team bios and participation is represented in our communities of practice
- Champion Kalamuna’s attribution in open source projects
- Express a position of technology leadership in Kalamuna’s social channels
- Define processes and standards to ensure Kalamuna delivers high quality, maintainable code and architectures
- Ensure our code conforms to applicable standards of accessibility
- Promote cross-project toolsets to standardize product offerings
- Ensure our knowledge base is up to date, socialized, and contributed to regularly by the team
- Develop ande nsure project management enforces standards for repeatable processes like: DevOps practices, technical audits (e.g. SEO, performance), security updates, QA best practices
